Dovetail House Care Home

People who used the service, or their representatives, were encouraged to be involved in planning their care. People received individualised care from staff who know their needs. They were supported to undertake social activities of their choice and maintain relationships with people who mattered to them. People received care from staff who were kind and respectful and people were encouraged to contribute to the planning of their care.

We saw staff communicated well with people, appropriate language, tone of voice and eye contact was used. We saw staff communicate with people in different ways demonstrating a person centred approach.

People’s independence was promoted, some people were supported with developing their daily living skills. The people we spoke with talked positively about the support and accommodation provided. We spoke with staff who told us that they did not always feel well trained to carry out their roles effectively. The manager acknowledged that training was an area where improvements were needed. We spoke with four of the people who lived at Dovetail House. Not everyone was able to share their views about the service verbally.

We sought feedback from the local authority and professionals who work with the service. We used the information the provider sent us in the provider information return. This is information providers are required to send us with key information about their service, what they do well, and improvements they plan to make. As part of our inspection we spoke with a number of people who used the service, care staff and the registered manager and deputy. On the day of our inspection there were 16 people living at Dovetail House.

Inspection ratings

They inspect care homes and care services to make sure they are safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led. Staff had received training in protection of vulnerable adults to ensure people were protected from the risk of abuse. This inspection took place on 15 May 2017 and was unannounced. The service provides care and support for up to 20 people with mental health and learning disabilities resulting from brain injury. On the day of our inspection 10 people were using the service. We reviewed information we had received about the service since the last inspection.

People also felt they could report any concerns to the management team and felt they would be taken seriously. People were supported to receive their medicine as they required them. People who used the service were safe as the provider had systems and processes in place to protect them from risk to their safety. They were supported by suitably trained staff who had an understanding of their responsibility to protect people from abuse. This included four people’s care records and three medication records.

Background to this inspection

People and their relatives told us staff had a caring attitude and they knew them well. Mum and I were so frightened by the prospect of residential care but Magnolia House has alleviated all those fears. I visit every day, at various times, and I have only ever seen staff show care, empathy and love to all the residents.

The service supported people to maintain important relationships and respected people’s religious and cultural beliefs. People had very few complaints, but those which had been raised were looked into appropriately. We saw that when people’s needs increased the manager made appropriate referrals for them to be seen by health care professionals. This meant that they could maintain people’s good physical health. They also told us how they supported one person with increased support needs. The summary is based on our observations during the inspection, discussions with people using the service, the staff supporting them and looking at records.

People who used the service were encouraged to be involved in decisions about the service provision. Effective systems were in place to monitor the quality of service provision. People were encouraged to make independent decisions and staff were aware of legislation to protect people who lacked capacity when decisions were made in their best interests.

Valley Care – North Nottinghamshire

Dovetail House is a care home for up to 20 men and women with an acquired brain injury or Huntingdon’s Disease. On the day of our inspection 13 people were using the service. The service is provided across two floors with a passenger lift connecting the floors. The Registered Provider must not provide nursing care under accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care at Dovetail House. People’s need’s and choices were assessed on admission and were met by staff who had been appropriately trained. People’s eating and drinking requirements were met and they were assisted to access appropriate healthcare.

Magnolia House are also welcoming new residents into our home. We have a dedicated care team who provide 24-hour residential care in a relaxed, homely setting. We reviewed the information and data available to us about Dovetail House on 8 December 2022. We have not found evidence that we need to reassess the rating at this stage. We offer a wide selection of meals that are cooked and prepared using local fresh ingredients for all our service users.

People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse and staff had a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities if they suspected abuse was happening. The unregistered manager shared information with the local authority when needed. Action was taken following any incidents to try and reduce the risks of incidents happening again. People received their medicines as prescribed and the management of medicines was safe. Prior to our inspection we reviewed all the information we had received from the provider.

We saw that care plans and assessments of risk did not always match. Some areas of risk were identified and there was no record of how to reduce the risk. On other occasions interventions were recorded that staff were unaware of.
